ABOUT JUDO2

JUDO2 is the second generation of "JUDO", which stands for "JAXA Universe Data Oriented". With JUDO2, you will be able to navigate Universe while observing various kinds of astronomical data, primarily taken by JAXA's astronomical satellites. JUDO2 is also an entrance of JAXA's space science archives "DARTS" from which you may freely download the public data for your own research.

In 2007, we started the JUDO project with Suzaku data. In 2015, we added MAXI data, and also JUDO is fully reconfigured using Aladin Lite, thanks to which various kinds of suvey data (in the HiPS format), including AKARI, are made available. We are thankful to the Aladin Lite team at CDS.

List of the HiPS data we created is found at https://data.darts.isas.jaxa.jp/pub/HiPS/hipslist.txt. These HiPS data are available at https://data.darts.isas.jaxa.jp/pub/HiPS. Other files used in JUDO2, json files (including instrumental field of views and the constellation boundary) and observation information files (a summary page and image file for each ASCA, Suzaku and Hitomi pointing) are also available from https://data.darts.isas.jaxa.jp/pub/judo2/json and https://data.darts.isas.jaxa.jp/pub/Astro_Browse/quick_look/, respectively.

Observation information of external missions

XMM field-of-views (footprints) and Chandra footprints, as well as direct links to their archives, are available thanks to XMM-Newton Science Archive and Chandra X-ray Center, respectively. These footprints and links are updated daily using the following commands to retrieve the XMM and Chandra observation information (meta-data):

Note, the "Chandra (Full)" footprints, which give precise detector shapes, are very heavy, so that we make the "Chandra (Simple)" footprints as default, where the Chandra field-of-view is approximated by circle. The XMM-Newton field-of-view is always approximated by circle.

The NuSTAR and NICER observation information are daily retrieved from HEASARC, heasarc_numaster.tdat and heasarc_nicermaster.tdat, respectively.

Note on the constellation "lines"

We adopt the constellation lines compiled by Mr. Akira FUJII, a renowned Japanese amateur astronomer. We notice there are minor differences between those by Mr. FUJII and those listed on the IAU page. For example, here is the Equuleus in JUDO2 (projected on DSS), and here is the one listed on the IAU page. We appreciate diversity of cultures concerning stars and constellations, so we decided to keep the current style in JUDO2.

Notes on the Ginga LAC FOV (January, 2024)

The Ginga LAC FOV are added in Janaury, 2024. The metadata has 7318 entries, but it turned out that most of the observations are too short and/or pointing was not stable. We have selected 2768 sequence among them with the condition that (1) exposure time is more than 90 minutes (one orbit), and (2) standard deviation of the pointing direction is 0.1 deg. The LAC FOV is the botom-to-bottom, 2 deg and 4 deg.

Supported browsers

We tested JUDO2 on the following browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Vivaldi and Safari. Sorry, we found JUDO2 does not work properly on Internet Explorer.
